Sixteen year old violinist and vocalist Laura Searles took top honors at the first ever Gaithersburg Top Talent Competition, held in conjunction with the 30th Annual Celebrate Gaithersburg in Olde Towne street festival on Sunday, September 18, 2011.
Searles was one of eight individual and band finalists to compete for the honor, earning her a $400 cash prize, four hours of rehearsal time at Impact Performing Arts Studio, and four hours of recording time at the Olde Towne Youth Center. The second place winner was seventeen year old violinist Rhea Chung. Third place went to local high school band, Pulse. The prizes were announced by Aly of the MIX 107.3 Jack Diamond Morning Show, and were presented by Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and City Council Members Cathy Drzyzgula and Ryan Spiegel. Also serving as an emcee for the competition was Justin Thomas.
The competition was open to young musicians between the ages 11 to 21. A panel of judges, including Krystle Hutton, Arnetia Walker and Eunice Whipple, selected the champions. Audience members had a chance to participate by paying $1 per vote, to be used in the event of a tie. Monies raised from votes benefited the City of Gaithersburg Student Union, a high school club that promotes and participates in community outreach, service projects, and extracurricular activities for high school students.

5 Music Contestants, Dance Exhibition
In what promises to be a heated competition, nine bands and individual performers will vie for the Top Talent title at this year’s 30th Anniversary Celebrate Gaithersburg in Olde Towne street festival, taking place on Sunday, September 18. The contestants will take the stage at the City Hall Concert Pavilion at 12:40 p.m., competing for cash prizes, studio time, and the honor of being named the Gaithersburg Top Talent winner.
Auditions for young musicians ages 11 to 21 were conducted over the summer. The nine finalists represent a broad spectrum of musical styles, with everything from rock and roll to classical violin. The three bands that will be competing include Pulse, Throwback, and Southern Charm. Six singers and musicians will also be competing as individuals: Rhea Chung, Shelby Galipo, Jalen Ngonda, Sierra Buck, Laura Searles, and Amanda Lee.
