Possible Postponement Date to be Determined

Independence DayThe City of Gaithersburg announces that its Independence Day Celebration, including fireworks display, at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, is cancelled. This is being done to ensure that power restoration efforts following last Friday’s severe weather continue in full-force.

Pepco has based its primary power restoration operations out of the Fairgrounds site and relocation of hundreds of trucks, associated materials and equipment to an alternative site is not a viable option at this time. “Our first and foremost priority is the safety of our residents and addressing the widespread outages in the aftermath of last week’s storm,” said Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello following an assessment with City staff and representatives from Pepco. “We explored all options to continue with the event as planned while not impeding with restoration work but found that was just not possible.”

The City is looking into the possibility of rescheduling the event to a later date in July.  A follow-up announcement will be made as soon as possible.
