CHARACTER COUNTS! Scholarship

in partnership with The W. Edward Bohrer Memorial Fund, DRS Signal Solutions and Rodgers Consulting, Inc.

Applicants must be City of Gaithersburg residents and seniors in high school.

History
In tribute to former Mayor Ed Bohrer's commitment to character education, the W. Edward Bohrer, Jr. Memorial CHARACTER COUNTS! Scholarship Program was established with the support of his family. In the past 15 years, 63 high school seniors have received more than $130,000 in college scholarships to help them achieve their educational goals.

Scholarship Information
This scholarship is intended for exceptional individuals who embody the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. The recipients must be high school seniors who will be pursuing post high school education at a college, university or trade school and who are residents of the City of Gaithersburg.

Awards
Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee. Previous scholarships have ranged from $1,500 to $3,000. Notifications will be made by May 13, 2013. Checks will be presented at a Mayor and City Council meeting in May 2013.

  1. City Residency (required)

  2. Completeness of Application

  3. Personal Merit and Embodiment of the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship

  4. Financial Need Consideration

  5. Community Service

  6. Commitment to Further Education

Timeline of Scholarship

December 2012
Applications are available online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/communityservices. They are also available through school guidance counselors, principals and senior class sponsors, or by calling the Gaithersburg Community Services Division Program Coordinator at 301-258-6395 ext. 3.

March 1, 2013
Applications are due by 4 p.m. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

March 2013
Applications reviewed, finalists chosen.

April/May 2013
Award luncheon with scholarship sponsors and City officials. Award checks presented during a Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers, 31 S. Summit Avenue.

CHARACTER COUNTS! Agreement
Winners of the scholarships who are involved in illegal, unethical or immoral activities between time of announcement and time of presentation, or any other activities deemed to be detrimental to the CHARACTER COUNTS! philosophy, may forfeit the scholarship.

ESSAY SUBMISSION MUST BE TYPED. ALL QUESTIONS ON APPLICATION MUST BE ANSWERED THOROUGHLY.

To complete the application:

  • Complete and submit Application Form
  • Complete and submit Essay
  • Submit two sealed, recommendations. Have the person complete the recommendation on letterhead, place it in an envelope, seal the flap, sign his/her name across the sealed flap, and return the envelope to you.
    • One MUST be from a person employed at your school.
    • One MUST be from a supervisor at your job, extracurricular activity or student service learning site. Neither reference can be related to you.
  • Submit copy of the 2012 IRS 1040 or 1040 EZ forms for both you and your parents.
  • Submit application by 4 p.m. on March 1, 2013, to:
