CITY OF GAITHERSBURG
MINUTES OF A CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009

A work session of the Mayor and City Council was called to order at 7:30 p.m., Mayor Katz presiding.  Council Members present: Ashman, Drzyzgula, Marraffa, Sesma, and Spiegel.  Staff present: City Manager Jones, Assistant City Manager Felton, Police Chief King, Cultural Arts Director Kayser, Community Services Director Carr and City Attorney Board.

I. TOPICS OF DISCUSSION

501 (c)(3) Updates, Current Activities and Future Plans

  1. Gaithersburg Police Foundation

    Mr. Keith Bryan, President of the Gaithersburg Police Foundation (GPF), described the founding of the organization and some highlights of its brief history.  GPF’s mission is to support the Gaithersburg Police Department by raising funds to provide equipment, offer educational and training opportunities, provide technology assistance and help finance community outreach initiatives. In April 2009 GPF received approval as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

  2. Gaithersburg Arts and Monuments Funding Corporation, Inc.

    Mr. J Persensky, Board President of the Gaithersburg Arts and Monuments Funding Corporation, Inc. (GAMFC), presented an overview of the formation, structure, and function of the Board.  The mission of GAMFC is to heighten the awareness of revitalization and arts initiatives within the City of Gaithersburg and to raise funds and use those funds to support those programs and initiatives. GAMFC reviews proposed programs, projects, or endeavors for consideration of support through an evaluation process guided by an established set of selection criteria.  Upon acceptance, fund raising may commence for said program under the auspices of GAMFC.

  3. Friends of Wells/Robertson House, Inc.

    Linda Plummer, Friends of Wells Robertson House, Inc. (FWRH) - Board President, provided an overview of recent accomplishments and future Board initiatives. Over the last year, FWRH made significant enhancements to its internal structure as well as implemented successful fundraising efforts to support the continuation of enhancement services for the Wells Robertson House program and the development of a new permanent Women’s House facility. Community Services Director Crystal Carr summarized the services proposed in the FY10 FWRH Annual Allocation request from the City, which the Board will review formally at the July 2009. The Mayor and City Council thanked the Board for its dedication to serving the Gaithersburg community.
II. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business to come before this session of the City Council, the meeting was duly adjourned at approximately 8:25 p.m.
