Water Park Renovation 2012
Posted 5/5/2012
The Water Park at Bohrer Park is undergoing major renovations and improvements for the 2012 season. Most notable work includes replacement of the main pool gutter system, new pool plaster, creation of a sixth lap lane, addition of two Water Slides and multiple play features, and a complete re-design of the tot pool to include an in-water multi-level play structure. Construction will be completed in time for opening day, which is May 26, 2012 (Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend).
The City of Gaithersburg completed a Facility Assessment Study, which concluded that obvious documented deterioration and the likelihood of eminent failure during the operating season was highly likely. Due to heavy use, aging equipment and materials, major components were failing and in need of replacement. A major modernization and capital repair project was recommended for the Main Pool and Tot Pool in an effort to preserve and maintain this amenity and operations for the next 20 years.
The project is scheduled to be completed in two phases. Phase I includes the Main Pool and Tot Pool renovations. Specifically, the City will replace the existing ceramic rim-flow gutter with a stainless steel gutter system without altering the existing pool contours and water to deck relationships, re-pipe return lines and gutter line, replace decks and drains as required by approved design, restore the pool structure, install tile and plaster, and modify a section of the existing pool to convert it from a 5 lane x 25 yard lap swim area to a 6 lane x 25 meter competition pool area suitable to conduct training. This will provide an additional 889 SF of water surface to serve more patrons. Additional work includes installation of an ultraviolet (UV) disinfectant system to protect patrons from water-borne pathogens for both pools and re-gelcoating the interior and exterior surface of the 336 foot white fiberglass slide.
The existing Tot Pool will be completely replaced with a new pool design that will better utilize the available space within the enclosure. Additional slides, play features and shade structures will be added to the facility as part of this project to provide customers with a new experience for the opening of the pool in 2012.
