Gaithersburg Elected Officials, Staff Members Receive MML Appointments

Posted 7/25/2011

City of GaithersburgGaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, Council Member Cathy Drzyzgula, City Manager Angel Jones, and Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator Monica Sanchez have received appointments within the Maryland Municipal League (MML), a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing 157 municipal governments and two special taxing districts in Maryland.

Mayor Katz, who served as president of MML from 2008 to 2009, continues to serve the organization as a member of the Board of Directors.  The 31-member Board is the overall governing body of the Maryland Municipal League.

Council Member Drzyzgula received appointment to MML’s Hometown Emergency Preparedness Ad-Hoc Committee. This committee is responsible for promoting emergency preparedness among Maryland’s cities and towns and for assisting municipalities in developing programs for effective response in the event of emergency or disaster.

City Manager Jones has been appointed to the Convention Planning Committee, which is charged with developing a theme for the annual convention, formulating workshops and general sessions relating to the theme, and planning the convention’s social events.  The convention is held in Ocean City, Maryland each June.

Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator Sanchez has been appointed to the MML Legislative Committee, which determines the organization’s legislative program and chooses those proposals from member chapters or municipalities that best exemplify the goals of all League members.  The Legislative Committee also takes position in support of or opposition to introduced legislation that may impact municipalities.

Headquartered in Annapolis, MML works to strengthen the role and capacity of municipal government through research, legislation, technical assistance, training and the dissemination of information to its members.  It is the only statewide organization in Maryland comprised solely of municipal officials, devoted to the promotion of all branches of municipal administration.
