Gaithersburg Police Department Launches 2012 "Click It or Ticket" To Help Save Lives

Posted 5/1/2012

Click It or TicketEjection from the vehicle is one of the most serious events that can occur during a vehicle crash. Of those people ejected from a vehicle, 75 percent are killed as a result of the ejection. About half of these lives could have been saved if they had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.  As sad as this statistic is, the numbers are even worse at night than during the day.

That’s why the Gaithersburg Police Department is joining state and local law enforcement agencies and highway safety groups in supporting an aggressive national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign.  Police will be ticketing unbelted vehicle occupants around the clock - night and day.

"Wearing your seat belt costs you nothing, but not wearing it will.  So unless you want to risk a ticket, or worse, your life, please remember to buckle up night and day.  Don't forget, Click It or Ticket isn’t just a campaign slogan, it’s a promise!" says Chief of Police Mark Sroka.

Maryland law requires that the driver, front passenger, and any other passenger under the age of 16 in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt. A child under the age of 8, less than 4'9" tall and weighing less than 65 pounds is required to be in an approved child safety seat.

For more information please contact the Gaithersburg Police Department at 301-258-6400 or visit the City’s website www.gaithersburgmd.gov/police.
