"Jazz in June" returns to Gaithersburg’s Music on the Move concert series with two local jazz greats on Friday, June 1 at 8 p.m. The Bruce Swaim Quartet and The Rick Whitehead Trio will present original compositions and American standards simultaneously at the Arts Barn and Kentlands Mansion, located at 311 and 320 Kent Square Road in Gaithersburg. The Bruce Swaim Quartet, playing at the Arts Barn, is recognized as one of Washington, DC’s premier jazz quartets and is one of the area’s most sought after performing jazz groups. The BSQ received the 2010 Washington Area Music Association award for Jazz Group of the Year as well as the award for Jazz Recording of the Year for “Winter’s Waltz.” The Bruce Swaim Quartet members have performed alongside jazz greats such as Rosemary Clooney, Danny Gatton, Keter Betts, and Tony Bennett. The highly acclaimed Rick Whitehead Trio, led by master jazz guitarist Rick Whitehead, will play simultaneously at Kentlands Mansion. Performing together since 1994, the Rick Whitehead Trio has earned several awards, including the Washington Area Music Association award for best Contemporary Album in 1998. The trio can be found performing at Blues Alley, Bohemian Caverns, the Smithsonian’s Jazz Club, the Kennedy Center, and many other venues in the area.
With concerts occurring simultaneously in the Arts Barn and at Kentlands Mansion, patrons attend the first half of the evening with a concert in one venue, then switch at intermission to enjoy a second concert in the other. Intermission features a variety of delicious, complimentary desserts, with champagne, wine, beer, and soft drinks available for purchase.
