Gaithersburg Runners Compete in North American Finals
Gaithersburg Sports Track and Field members Baebaa Sayeh and Jamila Thomas recently competed in the Hershey Track and Field North American Finals that took place in Hershey, PA on August 4, 2012. Sayeh finished fourth in the Boys Age 9/10 50 Meter Dash; Thomas finished sixth in the Girls Age 9/10 50 Meter Dash. Both runners were among ten regional top finishers invited to compete in the finals.
Sponsored by the Hershey Corporation, the program allows competitors from the United States and Canada to compete in local, state, and national events. Youth from the across the state of Maryland came to Gaithersburg to compete in the state championship on June 23, 2012. The first place finishers’ times from the state meet were submitted to the regional office, and the regional top finishers competed in the North American Finals.
“This is an amazing program that the Hershey Corporation has created,” said coordinator Dave Ludington. “It instills the same philosophy that the City has towards youth sports, one of participation over competition. Congratulations to everyone who participated this season.”
This is the second year that the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture Sports Division has conducted its own Track and Field Program.
