Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm Holds Geocache Treasure

Posted 1/3/2013

On January 5 the Maryland Municipal League (MML) will kick off the New Year with a Discovering Maryland Geotrail Launch in Greenbelt, Hancock and Perryville, Maryland.  Forty nine towns including the City of Gaithersburg participate in the Maryland Geotrail, which was created in 2009 to encourage exploration of the unique cities and towns throughout the state.

Using GPS units, participants, or “geocachers,” plot map coordinates to locate the treasure or “cache” in each city or town.  With the new launch in 2013, MML will reward the first 200 people who find and record at least 20 geocaches with a commemorative trackable geocoin. To be eligible, participants must record the location, date and code of the find in the Official MML Geotrail Passport and post a picture at each cache. Completed Passports must then be mailed to Maryland Municipal League offices. Certain rules and restrictions apply.  Visit www.mdmunicipal.org for details.

There are eleven geocache locations registered in Gaithersburg, one of which is maintained by the City of Gaithersburg at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm.  The others are maintained by private citizens.  All geoaches within the City limits must be approved prior to placement.  An application form can be found below.

The “First Find” prize at the geocache at Bohrer Park is two one-day passes to the Fitness Zone in the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.  After the First Find prize is claimed, additional prizes such as Water Park passes may be added to the Bohrer Park cache.

For more information on geocaching in Gaithersburg contact the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture at 301-258-6350 or stop by the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland  20877.
