In February 1999, the Mayor and City Council adopted the City of Gaithersburg Tree Manual. This document presents methods for preservation of trees and forests in the City, as well as the creation of new landscapes.
The Tree Manual, in conjunction with the City of Gaithersburg Master Plan section on "Reforestation", establishes a framework for the protection and enhancement of forested areas. The Master Plan identified nine areas for the establishment or enhancement of stream buffers. City staff is working diligently to plan and plant additional trees throughout the City. In 1999, the City of Gaithersburg and interested residents began a reforestation project along Quince Orchard Boulevard. Additional reforestation projects will occur in Kelley Park and along Rabbit Run
In 2000, the City of Gaithersburg received its 11-year Tree City USA recognition award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. To recognize Arbor Day, the Mayor proclaimed May 11, 2000, as Arbor Day and planted an honorary tree at Browns Station Elementary School. Students from the school planted 300 seedlings along the perimeter of the schoolyard to coincide with Arbor Day.
