Gaithersburg Arts BarnImagine... Create... Celebrate! 

Activate the Arts in You - A summer experience no child will want to miss!  Join us for one, two, three, or all 8 weeks of art exploration at the Arts Barn.  Each class will cover a specialized topic for your child to delve into the visual or performing arts.  Instructed by art and teaching professionals, these camps will evoke creative expression in a stimulating and fun environment. 

  • Registration for everyone begins February 6, 2013. 
  • There will be an exhibit or performance on the last day of each camp. 
  • All camps may include some outdoor activity. 
  • Campers attending all-day camp need to bring a lunch and water bottle. 
  • There are no registration refunds for Summer Camps. 
  • Classes will be held at the Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Rd.

Adventures in Musical Theatre “Finding Nemo”

Life along the Great Barrier Reef is full of danger when you are a tiny clown fish. Join Nemo, Marlin, Dory, sharks, angel fish and a host of sea animals in this underwater musical adventure!  Participants will learn all the songs, choreography and lines in just one week.  There will be a performance open to friends and family at the end of the week. 

Ages: 8 - 14 
Hours: 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Krazy Krafts - Wearable Art 

Have fun creating wearable items such as hats, belts, bracelets, rings and other accessories using recycled material.  Learn the art of fashion and recycling as you design and make your own pieces using magazines, bottle caps, duck tape and many more household materials.  There will be a fashion show for family and friends on the last day of camp. 

Ages: 7 - 12 
Hours: 9 - 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 - 3 p.m.

Playing in the Mud: Creating With Clay 

Have fun with clay. Incorporate nature in your design and create artwork using the pinch, slab and coil techniques of handbuilding.  Finished pieces will be picked up the following week.

Magical Musical Theatre “The Wizard of Oz” 

A combination of vocal training from choral camp with the stage training of theatre camp.  Learn the proper vocal techniques to project words in musical theatre.  Each morning will be devoted to vocal technique: intonation, pitch, breathing exercises and vocal projection.  Apply these techniques to present a performance of “The Wizard of Oz” on the last day of camp! 

Ages: 8 - 12 
Hours: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Printmaking

Discover the fun of printmaking, and use your creations in projects to create collages, cards, wrapping paper, bookmarks, and matted prints.  There will be an exhibit for family and friends on the last day of camp.

Drawing and Painting In and Out of the Garden 

A summer garden theme will inspire drawings and watercolor paintings.  We will work both indoors and outdoors.  Each student will complete multiple drawings and watercolor paintings.  Emphasis will be on building drawing skills and watercolor techniques while creating exciting and colorful compositions.  There will be an exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

Art Around the World 

Learn about Australian Aboriginal Art, African Masks, Russian Folk Art, Dragons in Japanese culture and Spirit Art (Canadian Inuit Art).  Create your own original art using different media. Please wear clothes that can get messy.  There will be an exhibit for family and friends on the last day of camp.

In and Out of the Garden: Art into Textiles 

Learn how to transform beautiful drawings and watercolors into textile designs.  A summer garden theme will inspire small drawings and watercolors on paper that will be used to create vibrant textile designs.  Adinkra style printing and silk painting will be explored.  Each student will complete a large assortment of designs on paper and two final images on fabric.  Emphasis will be on the process of transforming original images into patterns and designs.  There will be an exhibit on Friday for family and friends.

On the Hunt for the Great Masters

Adventures in Musical Theatre “Anne of Green Gables” 

Take a musical adventure into the quiet town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada.  The Cuthberts decide to adopt an orphan boy to help them on the farm but they didn’t get what they asked for.  The orphan girl that arrives wins the hearts of her classmates and eventually her rival, Gilbert Blythe.  Join the cast of colorful town characters and explore the adventures and challenges of Anne, her friends and her new found family.  Learn all the songs, choreography and lines in just one week and present a musical performance on the last day of camp!

Create your own imaginary room in a shadowbox with a design of your choice using different materials to sculpt/build three-dimensional images, miniature figures and landscapes.  There will be an exhibit for family and friends on the last day of camp.
