Statement from Mayor Ashman Regarding Ruling on Census 2020

The Supreme Court ruled to block a question about citizenship on the 2020 Census.
Post Date:06/27/2019 3:50 PM

Gaithersburg is consistently ranked as one of the most diverse cities in the country. As Mayor, I am gratified by todayโ€™s Supreme Court ruling to block a question about citizenship on the 2020 Census.

It is imperative that the census provide an accurate and comprehensive count of every person living in this country, regardless of immigration status. Census data is vital to ensuring that important services such as hospitals, schools and libraries are located where they are needed most.

The census data helps determine how many seats the State of Maryland will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Billions of dollars in federal assistance are apportioned based on census data.

Businesses and retail establishments use census data to determine where they will locate or expand.

Everyone in our community needs to be counted in order for Gaithersburg to be accurately represented in all of this. We are hopeful that the removal of the proposed citizenship question would allay fears from any in our community who might prefer not to disclose their citizenship status. It is imperative that we all participate and trust that being counted will have no negative repercussions. Furthermore, we hope that everyone understands that, by law, the Census Bureau is prohibited from disclosing or publishing survey information that identifies an individual.

The City of Gaithersburg is an active member of both the Maryland and Montgomery County Complete Count Committees. In the coming months, leading up to Census Day on April 1, 2020, we will be working diligently to reach into all corners of our community to encourage every resident to take the census. Our rallying cry, โ€œI Am Gaithersburg. I Count.โ€ perfectly summarizes the pride we feel in our community and the welcoming, inclusive environment that we nurture and protect.

We invite you to stay abreast of activities and learn more on our census page.
