Junior Mayor Hayden Sandlin

The 2020 Junior Mayor Contest has concluded. Hayden Sandlin, a student at Fields Road Elementary School, began his term on May 22, 2020. Congratulations, Hayden. Meet our Junior Mayor and watch & listen as he reads his winning essay here.

MML Mayor's Essay Contest

Each year the City conducts a Junior Mayor contest for 4th grade students in conjunction with the  statewide “If I Were Mayor...” essay contest, sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League (MML), the Maryland Mayors Association & the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Company. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about local government and to showcase their creative writing talents. When the contest opens (generally in February), the MML "If I Were Mayor..." essay contest entry form, deadline & instructions will be available in the Documents box on this page.

Junior Mayor Contest

The City takes this program one step further by selecting a winner specifically from its own community. Essays submitted by City residents will be reviewed by City staff & members of the Educational Enrichment Committee. Finalists will be invited to participate in a videotaped panel interview. Junior Mayors must be residents of the City of Gaithersburg.  Please use our Address & Parcel Map to see if residence falls within Corporate City Limits.

The winning essay will be posted on the City’s website. The Junior Mayor will receive a gift card and be invited to participate in City events virtually or in person throughout the year, including the Book Festival, Memorial & Veterans Day Observances, SummerFest & Fireworks, Labor Day Parade, CHARACTER COUNTS! events, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and more. The program includes the opportunity for the Junior Mayor to host a service project involving his/her classmates, elected officials & City staff.

Mayor Jud Ashman is available during the contest to visit classes to talk about local government and encourage contest participation. For more information & to schedule an appointment, please contact the Public Information Office.
