Celebrate Gaithersburg’s long and storied history with the railroad. View model train displays, explore a caboose and RDC, participate in train-related activities, and discover the hands-on learning centers in the museum. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the actual CSX & Amtrak trains that frequently rumble past the museum.

  • An N-gauge model railroad with group from BANTRAK
  • A G-scale, live steam locomotive powered trains  with Local Locos Live Steamers
  • Climb into the 1918 steam engine (not ADA accessible)


  • Saturday, August 10, 2019 • 11 – 2:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 2019 • 11 – 3 p.m.
    The Steam Engine will be open for visitors to explore.

This is a drop-in program for audiences of all ages. Admission is free, but a donation to help cover the cost of materials is appreciated. Please note children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
