The Legislative Affairs Division within the City Manager’s Office fosters working relationships with elected officials and coordinates and monitors the City's involvement in legislative initiatives at the County, State and Federal levels.

With guidance from the Mayor and City Council provided at public meetings, staff identifies legislative priorities for the annual legislative session in Annapolis. The most current will appear in the Document box on this page.

The City of Gaithersburg also contracts for legislative advocacy services to represent the City’s policy interests with the Maryland General Assembly and with individual State officials. The legislative advocate provides services at the State level to assist the City in pursuing the legislative agenda approved by the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council, and securing funding for areas of general municipal government, transportation, state funding, bond bills and other issues affecting Gaithersburg. Legislative Advocacy Services for the 2018 legislative session were contracted to Alexander & Cleaver, P.A.

For the professional development of its elected officials, staff and volunteers, and to allow for collaboration and the exchange of best practices, the City of Gaithersburg maintains memberships in a number of professional organizations. Some of these organizations also engage in lobbying activities on issues that may be of interest to municipalities. A list can be found in the Documents box on this page.
