New project 2/24/2026

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Public Works plans to conduct design and construction activities in Malcolm King Park. The drainage area to Malcolm King Park is large (approximately 2,000 acres) and is approximately 50% impervious. The goals and objectives of the project consist of:

  • Removing the dam to re-establish a natural stream environment.
  • Spot repairing severe erosion areas throughout the stream corridor.

A dam removal feasibility study was completed in 2025 involving the possibility of removing the dam and identifying severe erosion areas. The study resulted in no adverse effects by removing the dam and several spot repair areas were identified.

The City hired a consultant to continue professional design services which is planned to begin in Fiscal Year 2026 and continue through Fiscal Year 2027. The City plans to achieve project goals and objectives in three (3) phases:

Phase 1: Design services incorporating community engagement meetings at 30%, 60%, and Final design phases.

Phase 2: Construction activities incorporating the approved final design.

Phase 3: Post-construction monitoring.

If you want to be included on the project stakeholder list, please provide contact information (name, email address, resident address [optional]) to Stormwater@GaithersburgMD.gov with the subject titled “Malcolm King Park Dam Removal & Spot Repair Project”.
