The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers Montgomery County residents free tax preparation assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals who earn less than $55,000 per year. Preparation is done by IRS-trained volunteers who assist taxpayers in determining if they are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Services are offered in both English & Spanish.

Appointments can be made at 240-777-1123 during business hours, or anytime online.

Additional VITA sites are located in Rockville, Silver Spring & Wheaton.

Required Documents

The IRS will not allow VITA to prepare taxes without required documentation.

Please bring the following to your appointment:

  • A Social Security card and/or ITIN for EACH family member. We cannot use prior year files to verify Social Security numbers.

  • A photo ID for each filer.

  • W-2 forms for all jobs worked.

  • Child care provider name, address, and tax ID number or Social Security number.

  • All banking account information (a voided check and/or savings deposit slip) to direct deposit your refund (or set up an account through our Bank On Gaithersburg program).

  • A copy of last year’s tax return.

  • Any document or information about money you have received from the IRS or state.

  • All 1099 forms for other income, if any.

  • Any other tax related documents you have received.

  • If you are a victim of identity theft, you must bring the letter from the IRS with your PIN number. A new letter is issued from the IRS every year.

  • If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace for 2016, through Medicare/Medicaid, or through your employer, you should receive a Form 1095-A, B, and/or C. Please bring this form with you to complete your federal tax return.

  • If you have a Marketplace Exemption, please contact the Marketplace and get your Marketplace Exemption Certificate number to complete your federal tax return.

  • If you are married and filing jointly, your spouse must be present. If you are married and filing separately, you need your spouse’s name as spelled on his/her Social Security card and your spouse’s Social Security number.

Super VITA Tax Day

While appointments are taken at several locations throughout the tax season, a number of agencies are joining together to host Super VITA Tax Day on Saturday, March 2, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, where residents will be able to access free tax preparation and learn about other services & resources.

In addition to tax preparation and assistance with the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits, representatives will be on hand to provide food and nutrition information and assist with applications for SNAP (food assistance) and completing FAFSA (student financial aid) applications. Certified Housing Counselors will also be available with hands on guidance. Credit scores and reports can also be accessed at the event. Financial Institutions with the Bank On Gaithersburg Program and Financial Wellness Coalition will assist with opening low or no cost accounts in preparation for direct deposit of tax refunds and provide information on free vocational and financial education classes and one on one coaching services in the Gaithersburg area.

Assistance with Schedule C & C-EZ will also be available for qualifying small business owners, contractors and the self-employed. Certain restrictions apply.
