Residential Permit Parking Zones and Commercial Parking Sectors have been established in select areas of the City per City Code, Section 14. Residents and businesses must obtain annual parking permits to park in permit-restricted areas for extended periods of time. Permits can be applied for and maintained through the City’s Parking Permits and Tickets Portal.
Effective July 1, 2025, the City of Gaithersburg will implement a new Residential Permit Parking (RPP) program and changes to the Olde Towne Commercial Parking Pass program. The new changes will improve parking availability, accessibility, and overall traffic management.
All existing residential permit parking zones will remain in place under the new RPP program, with no changes to the limits or hours of enforcement. A new parking permit is required by July 1, including for those who currently have a valid parking permit.
Changes to the Olde Towne Commercial Parking Pass program include an automated parking permit application and renewal process with each permit being associated with a specific vehicle. Eligible businesses can permit up to two vehicles and passes are limited to users in buildings that do not have onsite parking.
Residents of properties in designated residential permit parking zones are eligible for up to two permits. Residents can use the Gaithersburg Address Search tool to check if their address falls within a residential parking zone.
Commercial vehicles are not eligible for residential parking permits. The definition of a commercial vehicle is provided in Gaithersburg City Code 14-10.
For businesses in Olde Towne whose locations lack on-site parking, up to two vehicles per business are eligible for commercial parking passes.
How do I go about requesting residential permit parking for my street or community?
Residents who are interested in establishing a permit parking zone should first review the following minimum requirements. Proposed residential permit parking zones:
Must include a minimum of 8 abutting residential properties
Must include a minimum total street length of 300 feet
Must be fully contiguous (no gaps or exempt areas)
Must be readily identifiable and comprised of logical points of terminus (street blocks, etc.)
At times of peak parking demand, at least 75% of the available on-street parking spaces within a proposed zone must be in use
If you believe your proposed permit parking zone meets this criteria, please contact the Public Works Department at publicworks@gaithersburgmd.gov. The Public Works Department’s Engineering Services Division will perform an initial courtesy review of the proposed permit parking zone to determine if the zone meets the minimum requirements. Residents may then proceed with submitting a preliminary application and petition for the creation or modification of a residential permit parking zone.
If you would like the existing permit parking zone in your neighborhood to be removed, you will need to obtain signatures from 60% of the households located within that zone. Please contact the Public Works Department’s Engineering Services Division for more information on how to initiate this process.
What hours are permits required?
Parking restrictions vary by street. Always check the parking restriction signage on your street, if any, for restrictions.
