Deck Permit is required for all new residential decks as well as any additions or alterations.

Decks constructed in the City of Gaithersburg are required to be designed to a 60 pound per square foot load. If a contractor is constructing the deck, they must be licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). Maryland law requires the contractor to obtain the permit. Homeowners may obtain a permit and construct a deck on their own home without a license, provided they are doing the work themselves.

It is a good idea to research contractors and obtain references from previous customers. You can check out contractors and verify licensing through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission.
