A Residential Garage Permit is required for all new residential garages as well as any additions or alterations.
Attached or detached garages require a permit. Attached garages must be separated from the home living area by a minimum 1/2” type X drywall for walls and 5/8” type X drywall for ceilings.
If a contractor is constructing the garage, they must be licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). Maryland law requires the contractor to obtain the permit. Homeowners may obtain a permit and construct a garage on their own home without a license, provided they are doing the work themselves.
It is a good idea to research contractors and obtain references from previous customers. You can check out contractors and verify licensing through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission.
