Apply for an Automated Residential Solar Permit Using SolarAPP+
The City of Gaithersburg has launched a new program that allows licensed contractors to apply for permits for standard residential rooftop solar and energy storage systems through SolarAPP+, an automated online permitting platform. SolarAPP+ automates solar plan reviews and performs comprehensive code-compliance checks to ensure adherence to the 2021 International Residential Code and the 2020 National Electrical Code.
Residential solar projects are eligible to participate if they meet the following criteria:
- The project qualifies under SolarAPP+ eligibility requirements.
- The project is not located within a Historic District and subject to a Historic Area Work Permit.
How to Apply
Using SolarAPP+ for automated residential solar permits is optional. Standard applications may still be submitted through Gaithersburg’s Online Permitting Portal and will follow standard review timeframes. To apply through SolarAPP+, follow the steps below:
- Create a SolarAPP+ Account
Visit the SolarAPP+ website and click Register to create an account. After registering, upload a copy of your City of Gaithersburg electrical registration for verification.
- Submit Design for Automated Review
Once your electronic registration is verified, you will be granted access to complete the application inputs for the City of Gaithersburg. A processing fee will be charged by SolarAPP+ for plan review. If approved, you will receive an inspection checklist and a SolarAPP+ ID.
- Complete Permit Application
Use the link provided in your SolarAPP+ approval documents to access the permit application in the City of Gaithersburg Online Permit Application Portal. Upload your SolarAPP+ approval documents, construction drawings, and any supplemental information. Make sure to select “Solar APP+” project during the application process. After you submit payment for the permit fee, the permit will be issued automatically.
- Schedule an Inspection
Once your permit is issued, you will receive an email with instructions for scheduling an inspection through the city’s permitting system. All projects must schedule an inspection within 6 months of project completion.
