Nature of the Work

A police officer’s position is a responsible one in that it involves the protection of life and property, the detection and prevention of crime, and the apprehension of criminals and violators within the City limits. To accomplish this, police officers enforce State, County, and City laws and ordinances, while working closely with community members, merchants, and elected and non-elected officials. Police work goes beyond the enforcement of laws. Police officers are expected to be role models in the community and active in every way to improve the overall quality of life for our citizens and visitors.

The work involves an element of danger and, at times, officers must take appropriate action without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in responding to and resolving emergency and non-emergency situations. Police officers patrol the City in marked and unmarked police vehicles, on bicycles, and on foot, and work closely with the Montgomery County Police and members of other law enforcement agencies as situations dictate. Police officers issue citations and other documents, conduct investigations, and prepare and submit comprehensive reports.

Due to the nature and challenge of the work, police officer applicants must be in overall good health and be in good physical condition. They must also be emotionally and psychologically stable to perform appropriately during both routine and stressful situations.
